Special Student Development Programmes Offered
The school’s Applied Learning Programme (ALP), PASTEL (Programme for Authentic Science, Technology and Environmental Learning) serves to connect academic knowledge to the real world. It further promotes the interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through solving authentic problems. Our students explore ideas of sustaining natural resources. Such studies can include water conservation where students learn water extraction techniques and water quality analysis methods. Fieldwork is used for data collection and analysis in the local water bodies’ environment. They are exposed to programming, the use of electronics and the building of prototypes. Students experience work attachments at post-secondary institutions and industries. Our students are nurtured to develop a keen sense of aesthetics and its appreciation via the Aesthetics Programme. It comprises exposure to and experiences in the performing arts, music, as well as both digital and visual arts. All the students will also learn at least two musical instruments, i.e. guzheng, angklung and ukulele. Through the breadth and depth of experience, students develop their strength of character, self-discipline, self-confidence, teamwork and leadership competencies. Students showcase their learning through performances at various platforms such as the biennial Yusof Ishak Festival of Arts (YIFA). The annual Student Conference is a platform for our students to present and share their knowledge and skills in topics of their passion. Teacher mentors coach students, culminating in confident speakers and quality learning for all. Under the 1:1 Computing Programme, each student is equipped with a Chromebook. Teaching pedagogies enhanced through technology are encouraged in lessons to accelerate and deepen learning. Students are developed to become self-directed and collaborative learners through the Flipped Classroom initiative and cyberwellness awareness programme.
