School Distinctive Programmes

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM)Fostering 21st Century Competencies through Design Thinking

Special Student Development Programmes Offered

The school’s distinctive programme in Design Thinking (DT) aims to prepare students for the challenges faced in this digital age of social and economic revolution. The programme fosters 21st century competencies and values in students, develops creative thinking in generating solutions to real life problems and cultivates life-long learning. Students acquire skills of analysis, develop empathy for human needs and build confidence in resolving issues. Design challenges based on real world situations allow students to explore characters and problems. Out-of-school learning experiences such as learning journeys, competitions, exhibitions, community involvement through Values-in-Action, and opportunities for teamwork will be integrated with the curriculum. Hua Yians’ work in designing and making rehabilitation equipment for real patients with wrist injuries, using the DT approach, was showcased at MOE ExCEL Fest 2013 and PS21 Convention 2013. The school is partnering STEM INC to develop a distinctive Applied Learning Programme that adopts DT and focusses on Health Science and Technology. Signature programmes that provide students with holistic learning experiences include learning journeys for Sec 1, leadership camp for Sec 2, overseas adventure camp for Sec 3 and whole school annual learning fiesta. Advanced Elective Modules are offered to Sec 3 Express and N(A) students according to their interests, and Elective Modules are conducted for Sec 3 N(A) and N(T) students that cater to their needs and aspirations. Leadership development programmes are provided to all student councillors, class, sports and CCA leaders, and all Sec 2 & 3 students are exposed to a balanced programme of activities to equip them with various skills and personal qualities towards attaining the National Youth Achievement Award. Students acquire cross-cultural skills via Conversational Chinese/Malay programme and overseas exchange programmes with schools in Indonesia and China.
